How The FIIT Co. Uses Mindbody to Engage Members and Drive Growth

Founded by Brad Cooley and Ned Matheson in Denver, Colorado, in 2013, The FIIT Co. was built around high-energy workouts and a strong sense of community. Originally launched as a HIIT-focused gym, the business has continually evolved into a full-service fitness studio offering strength training, HIIT circuits, boxing and kickboxing, yoga, personal training, and open gym access.

Over the years, The FIIT Co. has rebranded, expanded its class formats, and even grown into a franchise model—all while staying focused on helping members build relationships, stay consistent, and feel connected in their fitness journeys.

We spoke with Ned to learn more about The FIIT Co.'s evolution, what makes its community special, and how Mindbody has supported the business and its growth along the way.

Choosing Mindbody from the beginning

When The FIIT Co. first opened, Ned was making the leap from personal trainer to business owner. While he brought years of fitness experience to the studio, running a gym came with a new set of operational needs, like managing memberships and processing payments, keeping schedules organized, and supporting clients at every step of their journey.

At the time, Mindbody stood out as one of the few software providers Ned was aware of that could support the needs of a growing fitness business. With so many moving parts to manage from day one, The FIIT Co. needed a platform that could help centralize its operations and create a smoother experience for both staff and members.

"I'm pretty sure someone had recommended Mindbody to us, and we've been using it the entire time...I don't know how we would d[run] without it," Ned said.

Supporting daily operations, staff, and member experiences with Mindbody

For Ned, the most valuable Mindbody tools are the ones his team relies on every day to keep the studio running smoothly and create a better experience for members. Today, The FIIT Co. uses Mindbody across several areas of the business, including:

  • Membership management to support recurring memberships and client accounts
  • Payments and point of sale to process purchases and transactions
  • Reporting and analytics to monitor business performance, trends, and key metrics
  • CRM and email campaigns to send newsletters and communicate with members
  • Promoted offers to attract new clients through the Mindbody app
  • Attentive to support marketing, retention, automation, and lead tracking

Mindbody's membership and point-of-sale tools support the studio's core operations, while reporting gives Ned the visibility he needs to understand how the business is performing. He runs reports regularly to monitor key statistics and make more informed decisions. "I've been running some sort of report every day, pretty much," Ned said. "Seeing our statistics and our trends, that's vital information that we need to know in order to run the business profitably."

As The FIIT Co. expanded, Mindbody also played an important role in supporting the business at scale. In 2016, the company franchised and rebranded to Fit36, eventually opening 17 franchise locations. Mindbody helped the team onboard franchise owners and managers, connect locations on the back end, and support members who visited different studios. "Having Mindbody on board was essential as we opened new franchises and trained their managers and owners on the systems," Ned shared. "Members could visit different franchise locations while maintaining a membership at their home location, and on the back end, we were able to reconcile payments between franchises. Without Mindbody's back-end systems, I don't think that process would have been as seamless."

Driving growth with Mindbody's powerful tools and responsive support

Over the years, Mindbody has also helped The FIIT Co. create a smoother experience for both staff and members. With access to the app, team members can check clients into class, view member photos, reference important account information, and contact clients when needed. For members, Mindbody makes it easier to engage with The FIIT Co. before and after class, whether they're signing up, removing themselves if plans change, or staying connected through newsletters and other communications from the business.

In addition to streamlining daily operations and creating a more seamless client experience, Mindbody has helped The FIIT Co. attract new clients through promoted offers. One standout promotion, a one-week trial for $10, generated a strong number of sign-ups through Mindbody. "I've been most happy with the promotions feature because it's attracted the most new members. We get a lot of sign-ups having that through Mindbody," Ned added.

Beyond specific features, Ned also values the depth of the platform. While Mindbody's wide range of tools means there is always more to learn, he sees that as part of what makes the system so useful. "Mindbody is so in-depth," Ned said. "There are all the different offerings and features and aspects of it that are there to provide benefit to the companies that use it."

That value extends to the service behind the software. Ned has seen meaningful improvements in Mindbody's customer support, particularly in the attention and responsiveness his team receives. "The customer support level of attention has become significantly better," he said.

Looking ahead: A growing membership with Mindbody

As The FIIT Co. looks to the future, the goal is clear: continue growing their membership base while preserving the strong sense of community the business has built.

Ned sees Mindbody, and especially tools like Attentive, as an important part of that next phase. With CRM capabilities, automation, and lead tracking, The FIIT Co. can stay connected with current members while reaching prospective clients more efficiently.

"It has all of the offerings to fully support a business similar to ours," Ned said. "It's always done the job for us. I haven't considered changing to a different system because Mindbody takes care of everything that we need."

After more than 13 years with Mindbody, The FIIT Co. continues to rely on the platform to manage operations, support staff, improve the client experience, and create opportunities for growth.
