Last year, Americans spent $26.7 billion for Mother’s Day, which was 10% higher than the year before–a number that is expected to increase this year to $25 billion. Actually, since 2010, there’s been a steady uptick in Mother’s Day spending year-over-year. Besides greeting cards and flowers, what have we been spending more and more money for our mothers on? Gift cards.

In fact, consumers spent a whopping $2.5 billion on gift cards for Mother’s Day last year and they are projected to spend $2.6 billion this year

On holidays like Mother’s Day, you won’t find a better or more versatile gift than a gift card or certificate. They’re perfect for last-minute shoppers and those who are at a loss as to what to get their loved ones on this special day. 

As a business owner, you want to reap the benefits from this highly profitable holiday. So what can you do to ensure that your business sees some steady foot traffic and an increase in revenue? Well, lucky for you, we’ve put together some tips to help you effectively sell gift cards and certificates this Mother’s Day. 

Make sure your gift cards are on-brand

Moms deserve the best, and that absolutely includes the gifts they receive on Mother’s Day. No one wants to give a plain, generic gift card or certificate, so it’s a good idea to jazz up the look and feel of what you’re trying to sell. A great way to accomplish this is by customizing and branding them to your business and your customers. For Mother’s Day, think about exploring new color palettes, fun fonts, and new graphics. 

Promote your gift cards

There’s a good chance that some of your customers might not even be aware that you’re selling gift cards and certificates at your business. Make sure you’re doing everything you possibly can to promote their sales. Simply add some messaging to your email campaigns, or think about creating a brand new targeted campaign that lets everyone know that they are available for purchase at your salon or spa. Your gift card and certificate sales allow you to upsell any service a customer may already be buying as a gift. Pair your gift card sales with a list of your most popular classes, services, products, and their prices. 

You could even create limited-time offers and specials just for Mother’s Day to help incentivize your customers to purchase gift cards at your business. Consider something similar to a free product or free class for every $100 spent on a gift card or certificate at your business.
