10 Most Active Cities in America in 2022

By Denise Prichard

April 15, 2022

Each year, folks from all over the US resolve to live healthier, more active lives. As part of this year’s Mindbody Wellness Index, we ranked the Healthiest Cities in America—and being active is an important part of that. Some cities, it turns out, are a lot more active throughout the year than others. When it comes to setting fitness goals, it's these active cities we turn to for a little inspiration.

Here are the rankings for the top 10 most active cities in the US.

1. Miami, FL

Miami tops the list with 83% of its residents who work out at least once a week. The city also has the highest percentage of people (aged 18-65) who work out three times a week or more. On top of that, Miami residents spend the most on their fitness, investing, on average, about twice as much as the average American.

And even if Miamians have a particularly busy workday, they aren’t likely to skip their workouts—they’re huge fans of exercising in the evening

2. San Francisco, CA

Coming in at #2 is San Francisco. Around 80% of all SF residents say they work out at least once a week, and 56% do so at least three times a week. They also rely on their workouts to improve their quality of life and mental health—40% say they exercise to feel better mentally and 37% say it helps them reduce stress. San Francisco makes it into the top 10 healthiest cities in America, too.

3. Atlanta, GA

The third most active city in the US is Atlanta. Nearly 80% of Atlanta residents exercise once a week or more. Over half of residents (54%) work out three times a week or more. The city engages in a wide variety of fitness classes and is the second-highest when it comes to fitness spending. Atlanta's current workout faves include CrossFit, gymnastics, kickboxing, and martial arts.

4. Washington, DC

Our fourth most active city? Washington, DC. Seventy-eight percent of DC residents work out weekly, and 46% say they exercise three times a week or more. DC loves intense fitness classes, too. The one residents love most? Kickboxing. On top of those stats, DC’s dedication to a healthy lifestyle has remained steady over the last couple of years with the nation’s capital coming in as the fifth healthiest city for both 2021 and 2022.

5. Austin, TX

Halfway through our list is Austin. Seventy-eight percent of Austin residents work out at least once per week, and 50% hit the gym three times a week or more. Austin fitness warriors are also most likely to book a class during their lunch break. So, if you own a fitness studio in Austin, think about adding midday classes to your schedule!

6. San Diego, CA

The sixth most active city in the US is San Diego. Over 77% of residents get in at least one sweat session every week, and you can find half of San Diegans working out at least three times per week. Which fitness class has San Diego's heart? Gymnastics. All this activity has paid off: San Diego was named the third healthiest city in America this year, a massive leap from their eighth-place position in 2021.

7. Seattle, WA

With over three-quarters of residents who get in at least one workout a week, Seattle is the seventh most active in the US. Like many of the other most active cities, Seattle residents stay accountable with lots of fitness classes—with cardio, gymnastics, and martial arts being most popular.

 8. Long Beach, CA

Long Beach, a city known for its beautiful weather and sandy beaches, lands as the eighth most active city in the US. More than three-quarters of Long Beach residents work out at least once a week, while 44% break a sweat three or more times a week.

9. Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles comes in just behind Long Beach, with 75% of residents who work out on, at least, a weekly basis. LA residents engage in fitness classes for a wide variety of reasons—with looking better physically, reducing stress, and feeling better mentally being the top three. With beautiful weather all year long, it’s not surprising LA fitness aficionados are most likely to book an outdoor workout class. Have a fitness business based in LA? Host an outdoor event or add a weekly outdoor class to your schedule.

10. Boston, MA

Rounding out our list is Beantown, where 74% of residents say they work out at least once a week and 43% feel the burn at least three times a week. On top of that, over 42% of Bostonians clock 90 minutes or more of activity per week.
