5 Lessons Learned from Josh York of GYMGUYZ

By Mindbody

July 31, 2023

Beginning as an idea for a mobile personal training business in 2008, GYMGUYZ is now an industry leader with over 200 locations internationally. And the brand doesn’t plan to slow its growth any time soon.

As part of Mindbody’s new Momentum Series, our employees have the chance to connect with and celebrate the success of wellness businesses that are thriving. First up: a dynamic conversation between Mindbody CEO Josh McCarter and GYMGUYZ Founder and CEO Josh York.

What’s the key to York’s success? What sparks his contagious energy? How does he approach challenges (a global pandemic, for example)? How does he plan to move forward post COVID-19?

Check out five of the most important lessons he’s learned leading a successful fitness brand for nearly two decades.

Lesson 1: Keep a positive mindset

Even in the face of adversity, York believes in the power of positivity. The way he sees it, “Bad times, well, they create strong people.” Both personally and professionally, York encourages those around him to approach difficult situations by asking, “Why is this happening for me?” rather than, “Why is this happening to me?”

York explains, “You don't negotiate your goals, you don't negotiate what you want to accomplish in life, you have to have a positive mindset. And you have to surround yourself with positive people.”

Lesson 2: Be ready to adapt

When the pandemic hit, York had some tough decisions to make. He sought out professional advice but ended up going with his heart––like he always does. He chose to cut off franchisee fees to help his franchise family. He also decided to avoid layoffs. York’s main focus shifted to leading his team members and helping them get clients on board virtually.

Due to his quick thinking and adaptability, GYMGUYZ kept their clients using virtual classes and he managed to quickly recover from his monetary losses. Today, GYMGUYZ is growing 40-50% each month.

York encourages others who are looking for long-term success to be prepared to adapt, prioritize team members, and let your values and mission drive your decisions.

Lesson 3: Life is 80% mindset

York is a firm believer that life is mainly about mindset. As someone who has grown his business from the ground up, he reflects on the many times he’s been told no. Rather than let rejection deter him from his goals, York sees it as a redirection pushing him closer to achieving success. He advises others to focus on what makes them happy and will lead to success in their business and life.

Lesson 4: Lead by example

One of York’s most important pieces of advice is to lead by example. York shares that he’s always the first one in and the last to leave. He believes that you can create a successful culture just through your own actions and example––which is what he strives for every day, whether that’s creating a positive company culture or work-life balance.

Lesson 5: Fuel your drive

Lastly, York says it's important to find something to fuel your drive and passion in life. If you want something, no matter how grand, go for it. Follow through on even the smallest of details. Don’t let life or opportunities pass by out of fear you won’t succeed. Take chances to get what you want.

If you’re looking for inspiration on how to bring passion, drive, and intensity to your business (or life), look no further than Josh York of GYMGUYZ.
