You might not expect to find an affiliate in the middle of paradise, but if you travel to the blue waters of the Cayman Islands, you’ll find CrossFit 7 Mile.
As unexpected as a box in paradise might be, CrossFit 7 Mile’s appearance in the Games in July won’t be a surprise. The box swept all of the team events in the 2012 Latin America Regionals, a feat they came close to repeating in 2013.
Carl Brenton, co-owner of CrossFit 7 Mile, adds that part of the downside of such an exotic location is that they face a lot of turnover.
“There a lot of people who only move to Cayman for 3-5 years, so we get a lot of really great members moving back home all of the time.”
Despite the turnover the box faces when athletes move, Carl says he finds inspiration in their dedication to the sport and loves “walking into the box during open gym and seeing members working on their weaknesses.”
Carl says he also finds inspiration from his wife and co-owner Wanda.
“She participated in the first workout of the 2011 Open one week before giving birth and still managed to end up in the top third of women athletes in the world. In 2012, a year after having a baby, she ended up fourth in our region and this year she was first in the Latin America region.”
With Carl having a full time job and baby Logan, the Brentons had to budget their time wisely, which led to Carl deciding to use MINDBODY software before they opened CrossFit 7 Mile.
“I work a full time job besides running the business side of the box, so automating as many of the functions as possible was critical for me to be able to run the business successfully.”
As for how Wanda continued to work out after Logan was born, that took creativity.
“We had a crib set up in a spare room where she could nap while Wanda coached classes. She can sleep through anything now.”
