Want to improve staff retention? Try Automation.

By Craig Elsdon-Dew

When we go to work, there are jobs that we like to do, but there are also the tedious day-to-day tasks that don’t feel as rewarding. Sometimes we spend hours trying to accomplish them. These repetitive jobs don’t feel like the best use of our time—and they probably aren’t.

A recent State of Workplace Survey reported that employees spend an average of 520 hours each year on repetitive services and tasks that could be automated. This means that ten hours each week is spent on unproductive tasks like password reset requests, contract reviews, and approvals, emailing clients, updating databases, entering data and other similar jobs.

Today’s employees want rewarding roles and are willing to switch companies if they truly aren’t happy. This is especially true among younger employees, who may change jobs as often as four times in 10 years until they find the right fit.

Spending hours and hours on unproductive tasks is one of the things that take a toll on employees—and replacing unproductive tasks with automation is a simple and inexpensive staff retention strategy. Finding the right technology to automate day-to-day tasks eases stress by eliminating tedious or repetitive work, and allows employees to do the work they were hired to do. It’s an important step in increasing employee happiness, engagement, and contribution.

Afraid of how your staff will respond to more automation? Don’t be. According to a study conducted by ADP Research Institute, 55 percent of modern employees feel good about replacing repetitive tasks with automation. There’s massive potential in automation for employee satisfaction and business effectiveness:

  • Fewer errors. Automation makes exactly zero administrative and input mistakes and therefore eliminates employee hours spent correcting them.
  • Better communication. Automation automatically notifies the appropriate employee when a task is complete.
  • More productive use of time and resources. Automation frees up time so that employees can manage new initiatives and projects instead of punching in data.
  • Less paper-based processes. Automation (like WaiverKing) digitizes antiquated paper forms, contracts, and documents, saving trees and money.
  • A more successful business. Companies using automation are six times more likely to see revenue growth of 15% or more.
